> Ammon's Home
Mr. John A. Ammons was a prominent attorney in Gainesville around the end of the 19th Century. His home was located on Northeast 1st Street at 1st Avenue (then East Main North and Mechanic Street). According to the 1900 Federal Census, John and his wife, the former Kate Phillips, had two children-Mary (age 6) and Phillips (age 4). The Ammons family lived next door to persons who were quite likely Kate's parents, Newton and Kate Phillips, and their younger daughter, Claranelle. We do not know the names of the persons in this photograph, but we can imagine the little girl might be Mary. Tragically, Mr. Ammons died in 1903.
