Charles Chestnut III Charles Chestnut III
This photograph, taken about 1944 or 1945, shows Charles Chestnut III with his paternal great-grandmother, Louisa Kendrick Chestnut. The Chestnuts are long-time Alachua County residents, coming here from Camden County, South Carolina, in the 1850s. In 1914 Hughes & Chestnut Funeral Home was established in Gainesville by Charles III's grandfather, Charles Sr., and Mr. M. E. Hughes, making it one of Gainesville's oldest businesses. Charles III joined the family business in 1961 after receiving his degree in mortuary science from Eckels College in Philadelphia. Charles III grew up with a strong sense of community spirit. He has served as a civic leader in many ways, including terms on the Alachua County School Board and the Alachua County Commission.
