Duval Shoe Hospital (View 3) Duval Shoe Hospital - Open Gate
There is no caption, but this is almost certainly a photograph of Duval Shoe Hospital which was located at 216 East Union Street. Duval's was a shoe repair shop in Gainesville for many years. The persons are unidentified, but quite likely Mr. Charles W. Duval is one of the men. Mr. Duval's obituary in the "Gainesville Daily Sun" on February 28, 1933, reads, “Charles W. Duval, colored, died at his home on North Garden Street at noon yesterday following a heart attack. Born in this city in July 1876, Duval had resided here continuously and was considered one of the leaders of his race in this vicinity. He operated a shoe repair shop on West Union Street. Funeral services will be conducted tomorrow afternoon at 3 o’clock from Friendship Baptist Church. Hughes & Chestnut are in charge of arrangements.”
