    Sheriff Lewis W. Fennell Sheriff Lewis W. Fennell
Lewis Washington Fennell, known as "Uncle Wash," was born in Melrose, Florida, on May 7, 1855. In 1890 he filled in as the 14th Sheriff of Alachua County for two years and then ran for the office for three successive terms, 1897-1904. He served on the Alachua County Commission and on the State Democratic Committee and at one time, for a short period, he served as Chief of Police for the City of Gainesville. His home was located at 905 East Main Street North (present-day Northeast 1st Street). Sheriff Fennell is seen in this photograph posing on his horse in front of the old City Hall (razed in the late 1960s). This picture was taken in 1931.
