Rosa B. Williams Recreation Center Rosa B. Williams Recreation Center
The Rosa B. Williams Recreation Center, shown in this photograph, is located at 524 Northwest 1st Street. Named for a woman who worked tirelessly for all the citizenry of Gainesville, the Center is located on the same spot on which the Union Academy was located for almost 60 years (the Union Academy was the first school for black children in Gainesville, built after the Civil War by the Freedmen's Bureau). Rosa Williams served on the Gainesville Commission on the Status of Women, and she was a member of the Shands Board of Directors. She was the first Vice President of the Gainesville branch of the NAACP, and she served on the Hippodrome State Theater Board. She worked with the Girl Scouts, and she was the 1982 winner of the Gainesville Sun's Community Service Award. This photograph was copied with the permission of the Pleasant Street Historic Society.
