Dr. John Henry Thomas was a prominent physician who was born in Gainesville on September 13, 1907. The son of Maj. William Reuben Thomas, noted Gainesville civic leader, and Mrs. Katherine Thomas, John Henry graduated from Gainesville High School, the University of Florida, and Temple University Medical School. Dr. Thomas was attending a medical convention in Miami when he became acutely ill and died in April 1948. The Alachua County Medical Society started the John Henry Thomas Memorial Blood Bank in memory of the young man who died at the age of 40.
