This is a photograph of a group of Gainesville residents; unfortunately the date is unknown. The man and the woman on the left are unidentified. Mrs. Ruth Davis, center, was a school teacher who came to Gainesville in 1924 with her husband, Jess; she died in 1977. Mr. Jess Davis, standing next to his wife, was the Gainesville postmaster from 1939 until his retirement in 1961. In 1959 he wrote a history of Alachua County, which was updated in 1970, and in 1965 he wrote a history of Gainesville. He died in 1988 at the age of 95. Mr. Earl May is the gentleman on the right. Active in local civic and cultural affairs, Mr. May was an insurance agent and an artist, a sculptor and a painter. He died in 1989.
