of Alachua County, 1864
This is a portion of a map that appeared in "Johnson's Atlas" in 1864, the same year which brought two Civil War skirmishes to Gainesville. U. S. Army troups, moving into interior Florida, had no better maps than this to guide them-a reason that might explain why they became lost on the wrong road when retreating from Gainesville and were routed by Confederate Cavalry during the second engagement.
