Colonel John B. Dell
Colonel John Boston Dell was born in 1838 in Newnansville, Florida, near the present-day town of Alachua. His family was among the earliest white settlers who moved into Alachua County. The Second Seminole War was raging the year he was born, and he was 7 years old when Florida became a state. After exemplary service in the Civil War, Col. Dell further served his community as a member of the Florida State Senate and the House of Representatives. He moved to Gainesville in the 1880s and lived on Roper Avenue (East 7th Street). He died on May 21, 1914, and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery.
