Major John W. Tench
Major John W. Tench, a native of Newnan, Georgia, visited his wife's uncle in Gainesville in 1867 and returned ten years later to spend the rest of his life here. He was highly respected and loved as an educator, a newspaperman, and a writer. He died in 1926 at the age of 86, and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery. The Tench Building at 115 South Main Street in Gainesville got that name when Maj. Tench's son, Dr. J. Dawkins Tench, operated a dental surgery office on the second floor. The studio of the photographer who created this portrait, James F. Smith, was on West Union Street (now Southwest 1st Avenue) in 1905.
