B. F. Jordan & Co.
Birkett Fry Jordan stands under his office sign, "B. F. JORDAN & CO.-FIRE, LIFE & ACCIDENT INSURANCE." The office was located in Gainesville's downtown. Jordan's secretary sits by the window working at the typewriter-the ultimate writing machine at the time. In the 1880s, Jordan had been an officer in the Alachua Steam Navigation Company. The company provided transportation services, principally freight, across Alachua Lake and through various canals to connect with the railroads. When that industry ended in 1892 (a sinkhole opened and Alachua Lake became Paynes Prairie almost overnight), Jordan started his insurance business. He died in 1906.
